The focus area for the week of Dec 3rd to Dec 6th was Sight. The class read the book “The Eye Book” by Dr Seuss. Tuesday morning’s question was, “What part of your body do you use to see?” After discussing the question, the scholars were given mirrors to look at themselves and share what they observed about their eyes, eyebrows, eyelashes, and the whites of their eyes (sclera). The teacher drew and labeled the parts of the eye while the children shared what they observed, also labeling the pupil, iris, and the eyelid. The drawing showed the children parts of the eye.
Wednesday morning’s question was, “Why do we use binoculars?” Our scholars response was, “To look at birds, and to see far away.” After the class discussion on binoculars, the scholars made their own binoculars using cardboard tubes, yarn, and paint. All of the 3K scholars were excited to wear their binoculars to explore their environment.
One of 3K’s favorite stories is “We’re Going on a Bear Hunt” by Michael Rosen. As soon as the students put their binoculars on they started to sing the words of the story “We’re going on a bear hunt I got my binoculars, we going to catch a big one, I’m not scared…”
Thursday’s question was, “What is a magnifying glass?” Our scholars’ response was “It’s in the science area, we use it to see. Students use a magnifying glass to look closely at plants and sea shells. The teacher asked the students to describe what they saw to each other. One of the scholars, Zuri, said she saw zig zags on the sea shells and ants on the plant. Another scholar, Nasir, observed that the shells were hard to break. He said, “It’s so real, but the stem of the plant was easy to break.” Nasir also placed the magnifying glass to his face and said, “Look, Zuri you are big.” Justice said, “I see soil in the plant and white dots plant food.”
To end our lesson on Sight the scholars played the game “I Spy with my Eyes.”
