At SmartStart Nature Academy and Learning Center we believe that play is a tremendous part of how children learn. By incorporating hands-on, experiential play into the learning time, children get to do what’s fun for them and learn at the same time, so it’s a win-win situation!
During center time the children in these areas worked together to construct some amazing structures. While it may not look like it at first glance, they had to apply important life-skills such as negotiation, compromise and problem solving. Can you imagine how it must have felt for a four-year-old child to share the last two blocks that they wanted to use? Or to cooperate with three other children who also had their own ideas of what the tower should look like? Or let someone else read aloud when they really, really wanted to read the sight words? These lessons, in safe, naturing environments, give children the tools and skills they need as they grow and encounter stressful situations in life.
