February is Black History Month! This year, make your Black History Month a richer experience by looking beyond the common heroes like Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Frederick Douglass, and Harriet Tubman. Expand your mind with the accomplishments of other heroes and notable figures of the past, like Fannie Lou Hamer, Shirley Chisholm, Carter G. Woodson, John Henrik Clarke, and Marcus Garvey.

Then, consider some contemporary black Americans who have already influenced society with their contributions, like Dr. Mae Jemison, Earl E. Graves, Reginald Lewis, Mellody Hobson, Spike Lee, LeVar Burton, Ava Duvernay, Barack Obama, Euzhan Palcy, and Imhotep Gary Byrd.

Also, spend some time learning about modern individuals, like the many local politicians and artists who are working diligently to make society better; or the numerous men, women, boys, and girls who were victims of tragic insensitive behavior and actions; the many entrepreneurs, inventors, and thinkers who are striving to make Black America better day by day.

We hope you learn something new and share your newfound information with others around. Happy Black History Month!
